Pre-Convention Tour Monday

A tour overview meeting will be held on Saturday Night at 8pm at the hotel. Meeting room TBA.

The Alfa Romeo Club Pre-Convention Tour for 2019 will be based out of the host hotel, the Doubletree Hilton in Cranberry Twp, PA. Each morning we will depart from the Doubletree Hilton host hotel and return that evening to the Doubletree Hilton in Cranberry Twp, PA.  This will permit you to unpack your luggage once and enable you to spend more of your day enjoying the the many tourist activities in and around Western Pennsylvania and the Tri-State area.
Our plans today take us on some of the original sections of the Eisenhower Interstate system, pardon the constriction as we're still widening it.  When you are the first high speed roadway in the country you are the guinea pig.  Somebody had to be first and it was here.  Now it's being widened.

After exiting the PA Turnpike, you will enjoy a spirited drive to a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water, enjoy lunch at Nemacolin's Aqueous at Falling Rock, and a tour of Kentuck Knob, with an ice cream social just for us!

Then we head back a different route in to Shadyside, Pittsburgh and dinner at the Steel Cactus... but you can certainly stop as you walk from the parking garage and enjoy the Walnut Street Invitational Car Show!

Monday Schedule

  • 08:00am - 09:30am - Interstate Highway and twisty two lane driving to the Falling Water.

Click here for the entire Route Map for Monday. The Total drive time today is about 4 hour over 189 total miles.

There is quite a bit of interstate driving in today's route.  When you exit and get on Route 711 and Route 381 you'll see why there are a number of industrialists who chose Wright and his proteges as their architect.  The scenery is stunning. We first visit Falling Water and then head to Nemacolin for Lunch before we sprint over to Kentuck Knob for some ice cream and then back on the highway to Pittsburgh to the Steel Cactus and the PVGP Walnut Street Invitational Car Show.  The dusk drive back to the hotel takes you down Bigelow Blvd and the Allegheny River side of the city before catching I-279 to I-79 yo get you back to the Doubletree for the evening

Today starts off with about a one hour drive on the PA turnpike bu then you are rewarded with some an increasingly enjoyable two lane drive through the Laurel Highlands.   You'll pass through Ohiopyle, PA. The population was 59 at the 2010 census. While Ohiopyle has a tiny year-round population, it is often filled with tourists on the weekend, who come for the outdoor recreation opportunities at the surrounding Ohiopyle State Park, as well as the Great Allegheny Passage bicycle trail which connects with the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath trail to form a continuous 335-mile off-road trail from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Washington, D.C.

Fallingwater is a house designed in 1935 by renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959). The house was designed as a private residence and weekend home for the family of Pittsburgh department store owner, Edgar J. Kaufmann, Sr. Fallingwater is one of Wright’s most widely acclaimed works and best exemplifies his philosophy of organic architecture: the harmonious union of art and nature.

Fallingwater is located in the mountains of Southwestern Pennsylvania, also known as the Laurel Highlands, in Mill Run, Pa. in Fayette County, which is about 70 miles east of Pittsburgh. Wright designed Fallingwater to rise above the waterfall over which it is built. Completed with a guest house and service wing in 1939, Fallingwater was constructed of native sandstone and other materials quarried from the property. Fallingwater was built by local craftsman from Fayette County.

12:30 pm   Lunch at the Falling Rock - Aqueous
Inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, the boutique Falling Rock at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort takes its cues from nearby Fallingwater, one Wright’s most famous architectural works, designed in 1936. Everything from the lampshades to wastebaskets was carefully thought out by architectural designer David Merritt, who had the task of bringing Falling Rock to life, inside and out.

Anyone who is a fan of Wright’s work will thrill to the geometric patterns, natural stonework and every other intricate detail that Merritt incorporated into the hotel. And while guests never have to leave Falling Rock, which has its own gourmet restaurant, fitness room, hot tub and heated outdoor infinity pool, they do have access to all the amenities and activities Nemacolin Woodlands Resort offers.

As you drive along Route 40 on your left you will see Fort Necessity.  The Battle of Fort Necessity, took place on July 3, 1754.  The engagement, along with the May 28 skirmish known as the Battle of Jumonville Glen, was George Washington's first military experience and the only surrender of his military career.

The Battle of Fort Necessity began the French and Indian War, which later spiraled into the global conflict known as the Seven Years' War. This is the site of the the beginning of the very First WORLD War.

In 1953, Bernardine and I.N. Hagan purchased eighty acres in the mountains above Uniontown in Western Pennsylvania where their families had lived for generations. After falling in love with the home of their friends the Kaufmanns, Fallingwater, they telephoned Frank Lloyd Wright and asked if he would design a house for them. His answer was: “Of course. Come on out.”

At eighty-six, and hard at work on the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Beth Shalom Synagogue in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, and about twelve residential homes, Wright said he could “shake it (Kentuck Knob) out of his sleeve at will” never even setting foot on the site, except for a short visit during the construction phase. This would be one of the last homes completed by Wright.

About Shadyside Pittsburgh

Shadyside has changed drastically over the past two centuries. Originally farmland, Shadyside began evolving into a residential neighborhood in the late 1800s. It remained primarily residential until the 1950s, when Walnut Street’s retail stores began to expand.  Roslyn Place, a short street off of Ellsworth Avenue, is one of the country’s only remaining wooden streets. The tiny cul-de-sac is “paved” using 26,000 oak blocks.

Shadyside was a haven for hippies in the 1960s and 70s. The neighborhood was so rich with art, music and counterculture, in fact, that a 1963 Pittsburgh Press article called it “Our Greenwich Village.”
Back in 1982, if you go back toward Fifth Avenue on Copeland Way, right near Norman Childs Eyeware, and make the left in the alley on Comet, you'll find Alan Patterson's garage where the idea for the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix started.  The above video was filmed in Alan's garage.
