You probably don't think of Pittsburgh as being part of Appalachia – even though the landscape is one of the hilliest outside of San Francisco. The city’s historic connection to the Appalachian region – and its long record of utilizing Appalachia’s natural resources, including coal. iron ore, and the river system – make Pittsburgh the veritable capital of Appalachia.
Appalachian music itself has mixed roots in Irish, Scottish and English traditional music, and was also later influenced by the music of African-Americans through incorporation of jazz and blues elements. |
